About This Performance

We invite you into our living art gallery where bold colors, sharp contrasts, and unforgettable images come together in a concert that celebrates artistry in all its forms.

Michael Daugherty’s American Gothic is a vibrant, witty homage to iconic American art and culture. Inspired by Grant Wood’s famous painting, Daugherty’s score blends driving rhythms, jazzy inflections, and unmistakably American energy into a work that is both playful and poignant.

The legendary Jon Nakamatsu returns center stage with Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G, a dazzling showcase of elegance and bite. Written in the spirit of jazz-age Paris, the concerto sparkles with bluesy harmonies, razor-sharp rhythms, and haunting lyricism.

Modest Mussorgsky’s monumental Pictures at an Exhibition is a sonic gallery tour inspired by paintings and drawings of the composer’s friend Viktor Hartmann. From the swaggering “Promenade” to the thunderous grandeur of “The Great Gate of Kiev,” Mussorgsky’s vivid musical portraits bring visual art to life in sweeping, unforgettable sound.
